Meidan-ta-Meidan

How can a car-oriented city be transformed into a pedestrian-oriented one? This question formed the central design challenge of the “Meidan-ta-Meidan” project. Located in Arg-e Jadid, Bam, between two of the city’s main squares and adjacent to the tourism district, the project sought to take advantage of this potential by transforming the site’s single existing route into a network of pedestrian paths and extending this movement into the project itself.

As a first step, a series of landmarks and spatial nodes were defined to accommodate a variety of events. In the western part of the site, single-story market units were introduced beneath a lightweight roof. Conceived as a shading structure using local materials, the roof was designed as a repeatable system capable of extending along the project’s circulation routes.

In the eastern part of the site, a series of spatial clusters were developed, each of which could accommodate a different program. Each cluster is organized around a central courtyard and connected to the rest of the project through the main circulation route. In this way, the project is shaped by a network of pedestrian arteries, courtyards, and event-oriented public spaces. In addition to connecting the city’s two main squares, this network proposes an alternative model for urban development in Arg-e Jadid, Bam—one in which movement, pause, and collective life replace the dominance of vehicular circulation.
